This self-paced, self-learning CPD course teaches learners how to understand and calculate Zakat, the compulsory charitable giving required of Muslims who meet certain conditions. Written in plain, everyday English, it is accessible to learners aged 14 and above and requires no prior knowledge of Islamic finance or jurisprudence.

By the end of this course, learners will be able to: explain what Zakat is and how it differs from voluntary charity; identify the conditions that make Zakat due, including Nisab and Hawl; calculate Zakat across cash, gold and silver, business assets, investments, property, produce and livestock; apply correct deductions for debts and liabilities; identify who is eligible to receive Zakat; and avoid the most common calculation and distribution mistakes.

Course Content

Module 1: Introduction to Zakat — Meaning, Purpose and Importance
15 minutes. Explains what Zakat is, why it is the third Pillar of Islam, how it differs from voluntary Sadaqah, and why accurate calculation matters.

Module 5: Zakat on Business Assets, Shares and Investments
20 minutes. Identifies which business assets are Zakatable, explains Zakat on shares, funds and pensions, and covers valuing stock and trade goods.

Module 6: Zakat on Property, Agricultural Produce and Livestock
15 minutes. Distinguishes Zakatable from non-Zakatable property, explains the Zakat rate on agricultural produce, and the basic principle behind livestock Zakat.

Module 7: Deductions, Debts and Working Out Net Zakatable Wealth
15 minutes. Explains which debts can be deducted before calculating Zakat, and applies a step-by-step method to produce one final Net Zakatable Wealth figure.

Module 8: Zakat Distribution — The Eight Categories of Recipients
15 minutes. Names the eight categories eligible to receive Zakat, explains who cannot receive it, and why correct distribution matters as much as correct calculation.

Module 9: Common Mistakes and Practical Case Studies
20 minutes. Recognises frequent Zakat calculation errors and applies the full calculation method to three realistic case studies.

Module 10: Course Summary, Final Assessment and Certification
15 minutes. Summarises the full Zakat calculation process, includes a final assessment covering all modules, and records CPD reflection points.
